These workshops are suitable for all book and paper enthusiasts . . .

Learn the basics of bookbinding, make paper, decorative papers, books, or boxes. Choose your own project to work on during the two-hour sessions. Classes are limited to four participants. You will be introduced to some basic book binding skills, before moving on to self-directed projects. Bring your ideas, and get creative!

Make a book
Some binding commitments are easy to make, says Aayush Soni. Reading a book is the easiest way to kill summer afternoons. Turn on the air-conditioning, sprawl out on the bed and lose yourself in Salman Rushdie’s Luka and The Fire of Life. But if you find your fingers itching to do more than just flip pages, you might want to think about making a book yourself. Radha Pandey is an expert on the physical aspect of books. She’s a graduate of the Srishti School of Art and a former apprentice at the Still Water Bindery in Vermont, USA, specialists in handmade books. In December 2009, she spoke about the structural evolution of the book at the CMYK bookstore. Since then, Pandey has been teaching Delhi how to make its own books. The typical process for a palm-sized book involves folding sheets of paper multiple times, aligning them properly with a cover that’s wider than the sheets, piercing three holes and stitching it all together with embroidery-thread. Initially, you feel like a novice surgeon debuting at the operation theatre as you fold, align, pierce, re-fold and stitch sheets together. But by the end of it, you’ll marvel at how you created something right from scratch. It’s non-sticky, non-greasy, easy to do and the workshop can keep you occupied for at least three hours. Equipment isn’t an issue – Pandey will bring all the material over and all you have to do is follow her instructions. Should you get nervous about the fiddling and folding, Pandey will give you a crash course on the vitality of paper. “I tell them how paper is made and how it has a good memory,” Pandey said. “Whenever you do something with it, it never forgets. Stephanie's book is about quilts . . . a crazy quilt . . . a selection of quilt patch designs from all the rotation book participants. This is a small book, and the structure of the book is noted in the last photos listed here, the black grid. Artists were asked to do their design on the white paper, and Stephanie would put each design in the grid when she got the completed designs returned to her.

It was interesting to me to be able to tell the various artists by their work. A basket maker wove blue and silver paper for her square, and some artists used color pencils, water colors, paste papers, and materials they usually use with their crafts.

So starts Mary Liz's story about her father's work on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, spanning The Narrows, connecting the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn, New York. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world at its completion in 1964. It is now the eighth longest center span in the world, and still the longest bridge span in the Americas.

The Mayans believed that mountains were the most sacred features of the landscape and that they served as transitions between the physical world and the spirit world. I believe this to be true in my own life for mountains have played a significant role in my life here in Vermont and elsewhere. Their magic for me lies in the array of diversity they convey through their beauty, their magnificence, and their ability, regardless of height, to cause one's heart to sing with joy. If one can share that experience even once in their lifetime with someone they truly love, then one has exulted in one of life's purest forms of happiness. Even if it was only for a moment.

With April here and not a posting in sight . . . it is time to get posting!
I have arranged a new computer desk in the bindery so new entries will be posted more frequently. Usually there is a "black hole" between the bindery and coming to the house, where all the creative book ideas fall to dishes in the sink and laundry ready to hang . . .

Here is a painting from "Insetabet", a book Linda Lembke and Ellen Dorn Levitt made with students in Lydonville VT this spring.

It is a book that travels from person to person, and they respond to the theme set by the creator of the book. Radha created the book "Black & White".
